Our Story

The Shiranee Joseph de Saram Foundation (SJDSF) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1993, with a mission to enable neurodiverse people and their families to achieve their fullest potential. Through our Thrive Sheltered Workshop and Supported Employment Programme, we create pathways to meaningful employment for individuals with intellectual disabilities—an often-overlooked community. We also offer critical support services to families, helping them navigate challenges and build inclusive, dignified futures together.

SJDSF (formerly the RCCI), was founded by Shiranee Joseph de Saram, Sri Lanka’s first Speech and Language Pathologist, in 1993 following two decades of experience in the NHS in Sri Lanka and the UK.

Upon returning to Sri Lanka, Shiranee found a severe lack of services for people with special needs, often finding children tied up in homes due to the lack of understanding of understanding and an inability to cope with their needs. She dedicated her work to developing assessment and therapy services in the National Health Service and trained pediatricians across the country to identify children with special needs.
